Immigration Bill Shouldn’t Mean Amnesty

No more illegal border crossing” the majority of Americans say today. (Me in the count) The principle translates as the premise to the new bipartisan immigration proposal pending in congress.

Happy Birthday Florida!

In April 2013, Florida reaches a significant milestone: the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León’s arrival on the state’s east coast. This paramount event took place in Northeast Florida and St. Augustine is the hub of this big celebration. What makes this anniversary so unique is that Ponce de León’s convoy of explorers was the first group of Spaniards to document such a landing and give the territory its Spanish name: La Florida.

Phenyl-ethylamine, The Chemistry of Love

It seems that before someone gets attracted to someone else, the person has already built a mental map, a cast of brain circuits that determine what will make the individual fall in love particularly with one person and not another. So before true love knocks at your door, sexologists say that you will have already internalized the blueprints of the ideal person. Long story short, when that someone conforms into your map, it triggers the alarm and you crank your engine!

Here, There, and Across the Border

With a resounding success and always avid response in the market, Eco Latino Magazine celebrated 10 years in Northeast Florida. Cheers for that! We, at Eco Latino Magazine, look forward to a new year in which the magazine will provide more editorial content for both, bilingual and monolingual audiences, exclusive photos, reliable reporting from our exclusive corespondants in Latin America, and new events and projects that move us closer to the community.

Venezuela. Where have 3 million casted votes gone?

It was Hugo Chavez’s third re-election victory in nearly 14 years in office. Out of more than 18.903.000 registered voters, 17.000.226 (80,94 % of the voters) casted their vote. However, the counted votes have been 14.011.938. Almost 3 million of casted votes were missing (inmortal.net). Chavez won so did the totalitarian regimes across Central and South America. In fact, he dedicated his victory to Raul Castro and Cristina Kirchner.

“Fear Of God and a Little Bit of Me”

“You just have to have fear of God and a little bit of me,” the Argentine president said during one of her weekly broadcasts. Astonishing! Argentina’s economy has been very volatile since their 2001 economic breakdown. The trade and investment climate has steadily become worse this year. The Argentine government’s decision to seize a subsidiary of the Spanish oil company Repsol last April added fuel to the fire. The nation has given import licenses to 608 categories of products and companies sometimes must wait six months for approval to import.

Every Ballot Counts

The Department of Justice told Florida its current purge of noncitizens violates Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires Justice Department pre-clearance of state actions that have a ‘disparate impact on the voting rights of minorities’ and a federal law prohibiting purging of voter rolls within 90 days of an election.

Santorum’s Mistake in Puerto Rico

By Maria D’Adamo In the midst of the GOP campaign in Puerto Rico, Santorum set off furor by saying that English should be the "main language" of the island if it becomes a state. (Puerto Rico currently recognizes English and Spanish as its official languages). The candidate perhaps forgot that Puerto Rico has five hundred years of Spanish history and still suffers from the backlash of colonialism under two flags subsequently flown above their own.

State Attorney’s Inconsistencies

The February 8th protest to repudiate the charging of Cristian Fernández as an adult is perhaps the first demonstration among others to hit the street during the trial of the 13-year old accused of the death of his half brother David Galarraga.

Cristian Fernandez, Punishment or Rehabilitation?

After the Public Defender’s Office rejected the state’s second-degree murder plea last December, Cristian Fernandez’s case seems to continue moving toward a Feb. 27 trial. Underneath the heated controversy over the paradigmatic case lays the core of the matter that troubles most in the community: the incarceration of juveniles in adult prisons.

2012: Year of Destiny

2011 is out the window and probably remembered as the year of the protest. For the first time, the crisis exceeded the ballot box to anchor in the very heart of the system, regardless the color of the government.

The Movie We Latinos Saw

Most awaited response from Obama to the economic status quo crystallized last month into his announcement of “The American Jobs Act”. In spite of the presidential cry ‘pass it now’, this bill seems to have little chance to be enacted. Why? Simply because a large portion of the society is fed up with beating-around-the-bush policies.

Political Move Changes Deportation Priorities

What had been “suggestions” from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the detention of undocumented immigrants is now a detailed, formalized policy that stops immigration enforcement to act against illegal aliens who have not been convicted of a felony. The Administration has decided to dismiss all cases that don’t meet its "highest priority," (see immigration page). Liberal groups and Latino organizations gave a thumbs-up to the Obama’s executive order that led to a halt of 300,000 deportation proceedings, preventing many hard working families from being torn apart.

Fernandez charged as an adult?

Cristian Fernandez’s indictment on first-degree murder charges as an adult and the treatment he has received locked in isolation 23 hours a day, outraged many in the community. The outcry was heard loud in the newsroom. Among the voices close to the case was that of the Torres family. Alicia Torres is the mother of one of Cristian’s classmates. She and her youngest son were among the few who could speak with Cristian while in jail. They shared with us a passage of the two hours spent with him at the Duval County Jail.

We Are Now Visible

Last month I traveled to Orlando. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists celebrated its annual convention. Temperatures hitting 100F plus did not stop reporters, editors, photographers, news directors, and even executive officers of major Spanish language television networks from attending. It was an unprecedented reunion.

Race in the Race

Neck and neck to the last hour, Brown with 50% of the votes won the Jacksonville mayoral election. He is the first Democrat to seat in 20 years and the first African American to be elected mayor in the River City.

Preventable Tragedies

Florida loses more children under the age of five to drowning than any other state. Enough kids to fill four preschool classrooms drown every year. In fact, according to the 2010 Florida Child Abuse Death Report, the main cause of child-neglect deaths in Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties was from drowning. “There were 13 deaths of precious children reported through drowning,” said Nancy Dreicer, NE Region director of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Hispanics by the Numbers: The Blogosphere Ignites

Up until national-level findings from the 2010 count on the growth of population and race was released, immigration was not a headline seen on newspapers’ front pages. But as soon as the 43 percent increase in the US Latino community started to be widely reported, the immigration debate was, once again, under the spotlight.

Candidates and The Double Standard

In its monthly meeting, the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce offered the Jacksonville mayoral candidates a platform to debate on. Despite all the talk on the importance of the Latino community, diversity, inclusion, and the every-vote-counts motto, only one contender -Alvin Brown- showed up.
